Hoosier Group artist, T. C. Steele purchased two hundred acres in the Hills of Brown, twelve miles from Bloomington, in 1907. He and wife Selma built the "House of the Singing Winds".

"...the artist worships the beauty of the world, for his whole life's work is the endeavor to make permanent that which endures so short a time. The hours and the seasons, under the magic of light, weave and interweave the whole world of effect. Happy indeed is the artist if he can grasp and give again the beauty and significance of an hour, in this changeable miracle of nature, and make permanent upon his canvas the poignant charm of that which is so brief."

T. C. Steele (Brown County period 1907-1926)
Today, in the year 2006, artists and craftsmen continue to live and work in Nashville, and the surrounding hills & hollars of Brown County Indiana. Visitors to Nashville & Brown County, may stop by the T.C. Steele state historic site, and some of the homes and studios of artists and crafts people throughout the countryside.
